Numerous Retailers Said Hit by Data Attacks Similar to Target's

Numerous retailers were probably hit by an unprecedented series of hacking attacks that extends beyond thefts of credit-card data from Target Corp.pendant lampand Neiman Marcus Group, according to a security company working with the Secret Service. The attacks on retailers may involve multiple groups of hackers who appear to be working from a sophisticated piece of software code that began circulating on underground websites last June, according to a report from iSIGHT Partners, a Dallas, Texas-based security company that tracks cyber criminals. The report doesn’t identify whether the software, dubbed Kaptoxa, was used in the theft of as many as 40 million customer credit and debit card accounts from Target. A person briefed on the investigation, who asked not to be identified because the matter is confidential, confirmed that Kaptoxa is the same software that infected Target. Molly Snyder, a spokeswoman for Target, declined to comment.“We haven’t seen the last of this,” said iSIGHT Chief Executive Officer John Watters in an interview. “Now it’s a race to the bank with the criminals rushing to hijack the data and convert it into criminal gain before the door to profitability is closed.”

The iSIGHT report said the scale and sophistication of the campaign against retailers’ point of sale systems -- the terminals on which customers swipe credit and debit cards -- may be the largest ever seen, escaping elaborate industry efforts to secure a system that processes more than $3.3 trillion in U.S. transactions annually.Target, the second-largest U.S. discount chain,The knives wholesaler vertical of BRG offers aesthetically and ergonomically designed stainless. has said the theft of customer data may have affected anyone who provided basic information to the retailer over the past several years. In December, Target said credit- and debit-card data for as many as 40 million people who shopped in its stores between Nov. 27 and Dec. 15 may have been compromised. Earlier this month, the company said the thieves also got access to the names, phone numbers and home and e-mail addresses of as many 70 million people.Neiman Marcus said earlier this month some amino resinunauthorized purchases may have been made with customer cards, without disclosing the scope of the breach. Credit-card processors alerted the Dallas-based luxury chain to the incursion in mid-December and the company is working with federal authorities and investigating the matter, according to a statement.

What court's decision on FCC net neutrality rules means for you

Internet content is no longer treated equally in 2014, as the Federal Communications Commission Open Internet Order ran into a closed courtroom door this week in the net neutrality case of Verizon v. FCC.This controversial ruling in favor of internet service providers (ISPs) strikes down government regulations that had prohibited their discrimination of data that passed through their pipelines. The mistake of the FCC was that it classified ISPs as "information service providers" in 2002. This week, more than a decade later,China tourist visaamino resin the court's 3-0 decision saw through the agency's attempt to adopt rules as if ISPs were of the more regulated "common carriers" distinction applied to telecom companies. Now Verizon,Banner Pen AT&T, Time Warner or whomever you get your internet from can legally increase the speed of content that conforms to their business needs and, without rebuke, slow down or even block content that rivals their own services. If YouTube or Netflix are hogging up all of the bandwidth, for example, and your ISP has its own half-baked on-demand video service, it could essentially sabotage the download speeds of YouTube and Netflix and favor its own service. This, as you can imagine, bodes poorly for content consumers, a.k.a. the American public.

Proponents of net neutrality rules are alarmed at this verdict because it could create a tiered internet in which ISPs become the gatekeepers to what you can and can't access on the web.The scenario in which Netflix is treated differently from a cable provider's own video on-demand service isn't so far fetched. It actually happened in 2012 and caught the attention of Netflix CEO and Comcast subscriber Reed Hastings.Hastings noticed that Comcast didn't count the data used to stream video through its own Xfinity app on Xbox 360. A button click away, the video game console's Netflix, Hulu Plus and HBO Go apps did count against the data cap instituted by Comcast, giving Xfinity an unfair advantage.Scenarios like this make it clear that the choice as to which service is best may no longer be in the hands of users. ISPs could heavily influence your online habits from here on out. That's not only bad for the well-funded Netflix, it's devastating for the garage-based app developer with a legitimately innovative idea. The next Snapchat could easily be overshadowed by a deep-pocketed copycat like Facebook's inferior Poke app if it were too slow or counted against your data plan. Facebook would have the money to copy and compete, but two Stanford University students with an original idea would not.Ultimately, the biggest losers would be content consumers - you and everyone who uses and enjoys internet content.

Reform plans give US "hope about trade"

Washington has new hopes for fairer trade since Beijing endorsed a "decisive role" for market forces, an annual report on China's World Trade Organization practices has suggested. The United States is "encouraged" by a number of far-reaching economic reform pronouncements drawn up at the Third Plenum of the 18th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, according to the 2013 Report to Congress on China's WTO Compliance,Clawfoot tub accessories which was released on Tuesday. The report is compiled by the Office of the US Trade Representative. The decision purports to present one of the largest and most ambitious economic reform programs, and the US is "encouraged by these broad policy pronouncements and will closely monitor China's implementation measures to determine how and to what extent China follows through on them", according to the USTR report.Among the biggest draws are the broadening of foreign investment access in China, exploration of the possibility for national treatment at all phases of investment and the employment of a "negative list" approach in identifying exceptions. The report recognized the many "impressive steps" China has taken to implement its commitments following accession to the WTO in 2001.Notable developments this year to reinvigorate the market economy included China's readiness to focus on a high-standard bilateral investment treaty with the US and the creation of the China (Shanghai) Pilot Free Trade Zone as a way to test the waters of trade and investment liberalization.Banner PenThese initiatives, injector cleaner if realized, would provide tremendous benefits not only to China but also to its trading partners, including the US, the report said. But it also called for eased market restrictions on imported goods and foreign suppliers, as well as a lifting of government subsidies and to guidance that's imposed on State-owned enterprises.

"China continued to pursue industrial policies in 2013 that seek to limit market access for imported goods, foreign manufacturers and foreign service suppliers, while offering substantial government guidance, resources and regulatory support to Chinese industries," it said. The USTR also called on Beijing to overhaul its legal structure in order to better protect intellectual property. The report has aimed to act on behalf of US businesses and serves as the "agenda-setter" in the China-US Strategic and Economic Dialogue, said Wu Xinbo, director of the Center for American Studies at Fudan University in Shanghai.Wu said the report provides a comprehensive and frank retrospect on China's WTO compliance."The report is nothing but conventional rhetoric. The US is among the biggest beneficiaries of China's WTO membership. So the basic tone of the report is set to be positive," said Jin Canrong, a Sino-US relations expert at the Beijing-based Renmin University of China. But the US is eyeing further moves for banking relaxation to cash in on the lucrative financial segment, so "it has to act tough on certain fronts", said Jin, referring to the US' consistent appeal for lower market threshold."Export growth from the US to China has jumped significantly in the past few years, while Chinese investors are stepping up investment across the US. That is to say, Americans will increasingly value the Chinese market and appreciate Chinese-led capital," Wu said. The report came on the same day that China said it will reinvestigate US poultry product shipments for potential violations of trade terms, after the WTO ruled against penalties that the government imposed on imports.According to a statement by the Ministry of Commerce, China will seek evidence that US white-feather poultry products were subsidized and sold below cost.Earlier this month, China filed a complaint under the WTO's dispute settlement mechanism over anti-dumping measures by the US against 13 types of Chinese products. The US has so far brought 15 WTO cases against China since Beijing's membership started in 2001, which is more than twice as many WTO cases as any other WTO member has brought against China. The US allegations may have touched the core of China's compliance problems, which largely lie in the contradiction between international rules and domestic laws, said Yao Weiqun, associate president of the Shanghai WTO Affairs Consultation Center.

Beneath the clothes is a fierce competitor who still runs marathons

Beneath the clothes is a fierce competitor who still runs marathons (including this year’s in Boston) and seems to enjoy nothing more than denouncing AT&T and Verizon, which he refers to as a “pseudo duopoly.” (He doesn’t think Sprint is even worth mentioning, though there are new reports Sprint and Dish Network may bid on T-Mobile next year. )When he joined T-Mobile, “We had a limited time window and a sense of urgency,” Legere said.“We were losing over 2 million customers a year. So we moved as fast as we humanly could. My board wondered if we were doing too much. But the fact is, speed has become one of our biggest weapons. The current industry is arrogant, stupid and slow, which gives companies like T-Mobile a real competitive advantage.”Although the task of reviving T-Mobile seemed daunting, “I felt that as a challenger,Period Cup we might just have a pretty amazing opportunity in front of us,” he continued. “We could take a completely different approach to this business, we could create real customer value by driving serious change in this ridiculous and broken industry.”That meant upending long-entrenched industry practices, addressing what Legere calls customer “pain points.”

T-Mobile got rid of the much-reviled two-year contract and let customers pay for their phones and service separately. If they don’t like their T-Mobile service, they can change carriers any time once their phones are paid for.T-Mobile cut prices, with free unlimited overseas roaming. Armed with a war chest and additional spectrum that it got as a breakup fee after the AT&T deal failed, T-Mobile expanded and modernized its 4G LTE network, now available to 205 million people.A few weeks ago T-Mobile roiled the industry again when it offered free unlimited data for tablets.Representatives of AT&T and Verizon declined to comment.T-Mobile branded and marketed all this as the “Un-carrier,” rolling out new versions of its plans — already five and counting — even as competitors have struggled to match the previous one.“Surprise is an effective competitive tactic,” Legere said.wheel aligner “When you catch the competition by surprise, keep punching and don’t let them up. When you have momentum, keep building it by delivering unexpected offers in rapid succession. Our team is loving it. They are breaking the boundaries and getting to use all their creativity. That’s pretty cool.”Another group loving it is antitrust regulators. T-Mobile’s success has enabled the Justice Department’s antitrust division to take a rare victory lap, since the company’s consumer-friendly moves are exactly what regulators hoped for when they sued to block the merger with AT&T.“This really demonstrates that competition can work,” said William J.contemporary lamps Baer, the division’s head.Whether T-Mobile can sustain the momentum remains to be seen, and Legere concedes the battle is far from over.“We run scared every day,” he said. “We know we have a lot to do yet. But look at the choices customers are making. In the last two quarters, since we launched Un-carrier, T-Mobile has grown faster than everyone else, and we have added more postpaid customers than Sprint, AT&T and Verizon combined. I really think that says it all.”

Solar challenge draws cars built neither for comfort nor for speed

If you're travelling any part of the 3000km stretch between Darwin and Adelaide in the next few days, don't be alarmed if you see what appears to be alien reconnaissance craft cruising the roads. An array of futuristic vehicles with the sunlight dancing upon their saucer-like tops are taking part in the Bridgestone World Solar Challenge, a marathon north-south trek across the red heart of Australia undertaken by 40 teams. As the name suggests, all of the cars involved in the race must be powered by electricity generated from the sun. Organisers say they welcome "lateral thinking" in designs, hence the car that has a coating so aerodynamic that dirt doesn't stick to it, thereby avoiding that perilous moment when you have to guide what looks like a shiny door wedge on wheels through the car wash."One of the unique aspects of the event is that we don't prejudge people's ability, we have a class of cars where the only expectation is that you bring your enthusiasm," Chris Selwood, the event director, told Guardian Australia. The enthusiasm will be provided by competitors from 23 countries, including a team of native Americans from a tribal reservation in Mississippi, which excelled in a similar race in the US before heading to Australia."The on-road component is a big adventure and it's exciting," Selwood said. "But essentially this is a design competition to find the world's most efficient electric car."Saint Louis Zoo Installs Solar Power System

The race component, which lasts for four days, has strict rules. The harsh Australian sun could, theoretically, keep the cars running 24 hours a day so a timeframe of 8am to 5pm is set for driving hours. To ensure that the vehicles run on energy derived from the sun throughout the journey, solar cars are allowed a nominal 5kW of stored energy to run off, around 10% of normal total capacity. They then get as far as they can in the available time, often 600km to 700km, before setting up camp in the outback for the night."Early in the morning they'll run off stored energy, mid-morning there will be a balance point of stored energy and energy from the sun and then the middle of the day they will be storing energy as well as using it," Selwood said."It's a unique position to go down the Stuart highway in these cars. There are 140-tonne road trains but it's a lightly populated road with straight lines of 40km at a time. Australia's the best place to come out and play with solar car."Selwood admits the cars aren't built with "the comfort of the driver in mind" but adds the "real heroes" are the people who devise the energy capture and storage.Long term, this unusual vehicular challenge aims to demonstrate the viability of solar energy as an option for transport. While the popularity of rooftop solar panels has soared among Australian households in recent years, cars, buses and trains are yet to make the switch to solar-powered electricity in large numbers."Of course, if you are travelling from Brunswick to the CBD of Melbourne, you probably wouldn't want a huge solar panel on your roof – you'd generally have them on your garage," Selwood said. "If there was the political will, we'd be driving solar cars around our cities now because of the benefits in maintenance. But politicians are too wedded to the status quo."At some point, society will have to make the choice between being powered by brown coal or being powered by solar."
